“Where have you been?” is what I’m being asked by regular blog readers, and on Twitter – the answer is I’ve been testing the waters (not literally) on a new area of performing to step up my game.
I’ve taken my show and fluffed it up, given it a polish and added some amazing new pieces, moments and even jokes in to it and have been heading in to the world of guest entertaining on some brilliant cruise ships.
Speaking to a friend who is a magician on a cruise ship, it seems that I’ve gone in at a pretty high level rather than having to ‘earn the stripes’ that I’d expected to have to. Which is really nice.
I decided to have a look at the cruise ship work as a new challenge. These ships have on board some of the most incredible theatres, and I want to see how I’d cope with performing in the kinds of venues (theatres of 800-1500 people) that mostly only superstar mind readers like Derren Brown is lucky enough to perform in.
Of course I am still very passionate about my core corporate work, that is my first love and my 10 or so years experience performing at dinner parties and for corporate events is still what I am continuing to build on and focus on in the main. However the sun and traveling to some fabulous places whilst being afforded the opportunity to walk on stage and entertain under the ‘big lights’ of theatre certainly take me back to my acting days.
If you want to follow my travels, I update my Twitter most, as well as my Facebook with photos of the various places. So far the list includes Cyprus, Malta, Egypt, Naples and Mallorca. Later this week I’ll be in Istambul and returning to Naples for the second time in 8 days (who really gets to say that?! It’s madness!)
So that is where I have been, I’ve been performing on ships, flying home to perform for corporate dinners, charity dinners, entertain at product launches and dinner parties and then fly back out to another ship.
2014 is certainly the year I’m going to spend more time on stage than ever before.
It’s also a wicked opportunity for me to work on my new hobby in photography. So when not performing I’ve always got my Canon around my neck and my eye to the lens, trying to capture just the right image. And some day I will. The pictures on this post are my attempts so far (the one just above is Naples, and the one at the top is Cyprus)
