I’ve been asked by a lot of friends, twitter folk and facebook fellows what I think about Derren Brown’s latest TV venture where he’s making a lazy ungrateful guy believe the world has ended.
As with all of these events that have obviously involved a massive budget (around quarter of a million pounds) and tons of research and set up, there are skeptics coming out of everywhere saying the whole thing is a set-up and that the main guy is an actor.
This is inevitable and is probably down to the press wanting to ‘get’ Derren in the way they did with his Lottery Prediction stunt.
Last night as Lauren and I sat watching the recording of Apocalipse we were both filled with the same thoughts. It’s fantastic TV. There is no doubt, You have human interest, reality TV meets horror, meets secret camera and even hacking and con-like skills.
It’s very well crafted to appeal to many people for a range of reasons.
The premise is the usual thing where Derren likes to take someone and teach them a lesson. In the same way he did with having them fly a plane a while back.
The first of my tiny (and they are tiny) concerns are the obvious fakery of having Derren call the shots. This is a bit of shoe-horning of making sure we are reminded that this is all playing out because of some master plan that Brown has concocted in his clever little mind.
The second is that Derren now appears to be going ‘The David Blaine Route” which is that he is no longer doing ‘tricks of the mind’ like a good mentalist/mindreader, but rather is using his supersonic skills and intellect, dexterity, wit and everything else at his disposal, to perform stunts and spectacles.
I’m sad to say it but I believe it may be a sign that Derren may be on the down curve, and I just hope the master leaves on a high – whenever that might be.
Closing words: Derren Live is the real Derren I love. It’s genuine mind reading and showmanship in the true sense. It’s live we get to experience his wit and true charm.
What do you think? Has Derren lost it? Or is this really where we want to see him going for the long-term?
Part 2 of Derren Brown: Apocalipse is this coming Friday on Channel 4.
