It’s release last September 12, the iphone 5 took the world by storm. Apple aficionados from different time zones awaited the public showing either live or via satellite. Apple fanatics cued up outside the stores just to grab the latest iphone model. The much anticipated and buzzed about smart phone created such a fuzz that even a “non-apple” fan like me got curious enough to take a bite from the APPLE. But the question is, among all the recent gizmos released, why is it that the iphone 5 topped the list of the most talked about gadget?
The answer lies within two things:
First, Apple’s strategy on getting the attention of the world through publicity. The videos of the proposed iphone 5 model that circulated on Youtube got the attention of almost all enthusiasts and critics. The broadcast of ideas and the rumors on its features were also evident on every social networking sites way before the real iphone 5 was released. These further heightened the eagerness of the zealous fans which were all hoping for incredible new features from the smart phone, and these also made critics wiggle their tongues with myriad of reviews. Iphone 5’s publicity stint got the curiosity and attention of almost everyone. As they say, good or bad publicity, it’s still publicity. And publicity sells.
Second, Apple iphones are a status symbol. I’m not being prejudicial here but you won’t normally see someone in the slums using an iphone, yet alone an iphone 5. The iphone 5, along with its amazing and new features, comes in a hefty price and buying one would entail a month’s salary for an average laborer. For someone who wants to stand out from the crowd, wants to experience its advance technology, be the one who just want to hold the “it” phone or just simply a die-hard Apple fanatic, you’d want to buy this phone because it would give you that certain aura of “coolness” and social boost. Believe me or not, who wouldn’t wanna hear someone telling you that “you’re so cool! you have the iphone 5!”.
Apple is composed of brilliant minds that are not only gadget geeks but are also businessmen. Steve Job’s quest to further advance human life and provide better ergonomics is backed up by the ideology of making more money to make more advancements and reach the apex in the gadget world. With numerous gizmos and whatchamacallits surfacing the market today, Apple needed a good strategy to steal the spotlight and situate itself as the leader.
With the publicity surrounding its release, and the social status that comes from having the “it” phone, even Snow White would surely stand outside any store just to get a big bite of the newest Apple.
